$1 Billion Commitment to Combat Mpox Outbreak in Africa

On September 27, 2024, a coalition of stakeholders pledged approximately $1 billion to address the Mpox outbreak currently affecting Africa. The United States contributed $5 million towards these efforts. Dr. Jean Kaseya of the Africa CDC emphasized the urgent need for enhanced monitoring systems, pointing out significant challenges such as insufficient surveillance and limited testing capabilities.

While 4.3 million doses of vaccines have been donated, their distribution has been hindered by logistical challenges. This year, reports indicate that 15 African nations have confirmed cases of Mpox, raising alarms about the potential spread of a more transmissible strain known as Clade Ib.
