In a devastating accident, at least 21 passengers are feared dead after two boats collided on the Lagos Lagoon near Imore town in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area on Monday. The collision, which involved two boats carrying 16 passengers each, led to both vessels capsizing in the middle of the waterway.

Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a press release on Tuesday. According to the statement, the Ilashe police division received a distress call at around 7 p.m., alerting them to the tragic event. Emergency responders, including marine police units and local divers, were quickly dispatched to the scene.

Eleven passengers who sustained injuries were rescued and immediately transported to the Naval Hospital in Navy Town, Alakija, for urgent medical care.

“The boats, which were unregistered, collided in the lagoon at Imore town, causing passengers and their belongings to be thrown into the water,” Hundeyin explained. Rescue teams managed to save 11 passengers, but many remain missing.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the collision, while efforts to recover the missing passengers continue.
