Interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy believes that Amad Diallo’s time on the bench helped fuel his motivation during Manchester United’s 2-0 win over PAOK in the Europa League. The Ivorian winger, who had been a substitute for six consecutive matches, was given the chance to start at Old Trafford and delivered a standout performance, scoring both of United’s goals.

Van Nistelrooy noted that the 22-year-old was “our best player in the first half” and “won us the game in the second half.” When asked if Diallo’s time as a substitute was a driving force, the manager simply responded, “Apparently so.” Despite facing limited opposition, Amad was a constant threat, regularly running at the PAOK defense and maintaining his determination even when his efforts initially went unrewarded.

Although Van Nistelrooy admitted United had a challenging first half, with “many technical mistakes” and only one shot on goal, Amad’s impact was undeniable after the break. The second goal, which sealed the victory, was a testament to his hard work and skill, as he battled for possession, charged past a defender, and expertly curled the ball around the goalkeeper.

“That goal had everything in it that is Diallo,” Van Nistelrooy explained. “He fought to win the ball off the defender, then pushed through to take the shot and had the quality to bend it around the goalkeeper.”

The manager also praised Amad’s dedication, stating that the young forward consistently works hard in training, always seeking ways to improve his finishing, crossing, and one-on-one play. “He is constantly focused on learning and getting better,” Van Nistelrooy added.

Amad’s current contract with Manchester United runs until next June, though the club holds an option for an additional year. The winger has expressed his desire to remain at the club for a long time. As Ruben Amorim prepares to take charge next week, Diallo will have another opportunity to impress his new boss.
