ASUU Urges Federal Government to Address Agreements Without Delay

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to cease its delaying tactics and promptly implement previously agreed terms to avert another strike. The Yola Zone of ASUU expressed disappointment with the federal government, highlighting its insensitivity toward longstanding agreements made with the union.

In a statement from Chairman Dani Mamman, ASUU emphasized the importance of prioritizing the future of Nigerian students by honoring the 2022 agreement that led to the suspension of that year’s strike. The Yola Zone encompasses several institutions, including Modibbo Adama University Yola, University of Maiduguri, Federal University Gashua, Taraba State University Jalingo, Adamawa State University Mubi, and Yobe State University Damaturu. Mamman pointed out that the continuous breach of agreements by the federal government is unreasonable.

He further noted that the government’s failure to implement various Memoranda of Understanding from 2013 to 2022 has severely disrupted industrial harmony in public universities. ASUU had previously issued a 21-day ultimatum on August 21, 2024, to resolve outstanding issues dating back to 2009; however, little progress has been made.

Mamman clearly stated that if the federal government does not provide tangible results by the end of the two-week extension granted by the union’s national leadership, members would be prepared to withdraw their services. The union has stressed the urgent need for government action, warning that it would bear responsibility if a strike occurs due to unaddressed demands.
