Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called for transparency and fairness in the ongoing review of Tax Reform Bills by the National Assembly. Highlighting the importance of equitable development across Nigeria’s federating units, Atiku stressed that fiscal policies must promote justice and inclusiveness.

In a statement released on Sunday, Atiku voiced his concerns over the uneven development among states, urging the National Assembly to ensure the reform process reflects the interests of all Nigerians. “Nigerians are united in their call for a fiscal system that promotes justice, fairness, and equity. The fiscal system we seek must not exacerbate the uneven development of the federating units by favouring a few states while unfairly penalising others,” Atiku stated.

He emphasized the need for an objective and inclusive public hearing on the bills, urging the involvement of diverse stakeholders such as civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and economic experts. “Transparency and objectivity are essential for promoting accountability, good governance, and public trust in policy-making. The public hearing process must facilitate open and inclusive participation by all stakeholders,” Atiku noted.

Additionally, Atiku urged the National Assembly to revisit and publish the resolutions of the National Economic Council (NEC), describing the body as crucial for advising on Nigeria’s economic affairs. “The NASS must ensure that, in the final analysis, the contents of the bills align with the interests of the vast majority of Nigerians,” he added.

The Tax Reform Bills have sparked widespread debate across the country, with concerns raised about their potential impact on economic justice and regional development. Atiku’s remarks add to the growing calls for reforms that prioritize fairness and equitable progress for all Nigerians.
