The ongoing crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has escalated, with party elders, known as the G14, advising former Governor Senator Gabriel Suswam to step down from the group if he chooses. The G14, a body of PDP elders from 14 local government areas of the Tiv ethnic block, was co-chaired by Suswam, who recently declared that the group had been disbanded.

During a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi earlier this week, Suswam announced plans to dissolve the G14 and replace it with a new caucus of party members. However, his decision has sparked further discord, particularly in light of an ongoing power struggle between Suswam and his successor, Samuel Ortom, over control of the PDP in Benue State, a conflict that began during the 2023 ward congress.

Since leaving office, Ortom has assumed a leadership role in the G14, leading to heightened tensions. The chairman of the group, Laha Dzever, responded swiftly to Suswam’s declaration, insisting that the G14 is a voluntary group that cannot be disbanded by any one individual. Dzever emphasized that while Suswam can resign his membership, he does not have the authority to dissolve the group.

In a statement titled G-14 Remains Intact and Committed to PDP, Dzever explained that the G14 was established in 2015 to prevent the disintegration of the PDP following significant losses in the gubernatorial and senatorial races. “The group was formed to restore unity and stability to the party,” Dzever said, recalling Suswam’s involvement in its creation.

He further clarified that the co-chairmanship passed to Samuel Ortom in 2018 when he became the leader of the PDP in Benue State. “Ortom continues to lead with a sense of responsibility and statesmanship,” Dzever added.

The G14 elders reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding the PDP and addressing the current crisis. “We stand firm in our mission to unify the party, just as we did in 2015 when we regained power,” the statement continued. The group called on all party members to prioritize peace and unity over personal interests, urging leaders to de-escalate tensions and seek reconciliation.

As the Benue PDP faces growing internal challenges, the G14 vowed to continue its efforts to strengthen the party and prepare for future elections, particularly as they aim to reclaim power in 2027.
