The Federal Government has suspended officers overseeing both the Maximum and Minimum Custodial Centres at Kirikiri Prison, Lagos, following allegations that popular cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, was given special treatment during his six-month sentence. An audio leak claimed that Bobrisky paid N15 million to secure an apartment outside the facility.

Ja’afaru Ahmed, Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), confirmed the suspension in a statement on Thursday in Abuja. The announcement came just a day after Interior Minister Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo initiated a full investigation into the scandal. Ahmed emphasized that the suspensions were necessary to ensure an unbiased investigation, with findings to be made public once completed.

Ahmed further explained, “In response to a viral audio on social media exposing alleged misconduct by officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service in connection with Mr. Idris Okuneye, the CDCFIB has suspended the following senior officers:”

  • Michael Anugwa, Deputy Controller of Corrections for the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos;
  • Sikiru Adekunle, Deputy Controller of Corrections for the Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Kirikiri, Lagos.

In addition, ASC II Ogbule Samuel Obinna from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, has been suspended for reportedly escorting a convicted inmate outside the prison. Another senior officer, Iloafonsi Kevin Ikechukwu, Deputy Controller of Corrections in Kuje, Abuja, faces suspension for allegedly accepting bribes on behalf of an inmate.
