Residents of Kwararafa Chiefdom in Taraba State’s Gassol local government area have called on Governor Agbu Kefas to take action against alleged harassment perpetrated by Chief Idris Chiroma of Gassol. The community asserts that the monarch is leveraging security forces and the judicial system to intimidate them, despite lacking any legitimate authority over Kwararafa.

During a recent demonstration, spokesperson Kefas Sabo reported a rise in police harassment since the Chief’s brother was elected to the House of Representatives in 2023. According to the residents, Chief Chiroma has consistently opposed Kwararafa’s designation as a chiefdom in 2018 and has initiated several lawsuits against it, all of which have ruled in favor of Kwararafa.

The protesters further accused the Chief of pursuing numerous legal actions against local farmers and collaborating with officials to manipulate village boundaries. They implored the governor to step in and halt these alleged encroachments. In response to these claims, Chief Chiroma has denied any wrongdoing through an elder, Senator Ibrahim Goje, describing the allegations as “baseless and false.”
