Two human rights organizations, the Anti-Corruption and Integrity Forum and the International Human Rights Commission, have strongly criticized the arrest of former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged misuse of N1.3 trillion. The groups argue that the arrest is politically motivated, with claims that Okowa is being unfairly targeted.

Dr. Okowa, who was detained by the EFCC on Monday, is accused of embezzling N1.3 trillion belonging to Delta State during his tenure as governor. In response, Joseph Kpokpogri, the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Integrity Forum, raised concerns about the EFCC’s approach. He stated that Okowa should be granted bail based on self-recognition, particularly given his voluntary appearance at the EFCC office in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Kpokpogri further highlighted Okowa’s respectful and cooperative demeanor, contrasting it with that of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who had repeatedly resisted arrest by the EFCC. The groups argue that the media trial surrounding Okowa is both unjust and politically charged, seeking to damage the opposition party, the PDP, ahead of future elections.

Both organizations have threatened to take action by occupying the EFCC’s Regional Office in Port Harcourt if the commission fails to provide solid evidence to back the allegations. Kpokpogri questioned the credibility of the claims, pointing out that for such a large sum to be misappropriated, it would imply that basic state functions, such as salary payments, road construction, and healthcare, were entirely neglected during Okowa’s time in office.
