Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has expressed his frustration over Jack Grealish’s call-up to England’s Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland. Despite not having played for Manchester City since their 3-2 victory over Wolves on October 20, Grealish was named in England’s squad by interim manager Lee Carsley.

Guardiola, who has ruled the 29-year-old out of City’s upcoming Premier League clash against Brighton, questioned why Grealish was selected, citing concerns over the player’s fitness. While Carsley defended the selection, mentioning that Grealish had been training for a few days and would be assessed upon his arrival with the England squad, Guardiola highlighted the player’s lack of training.

“Jack hasn’t trained properly in the past 17 days,” Guardiola stated. “Today was the first time he trained for just 20 minutes. He was in the gym for a few minutes over the last two days, but that’s it.” He further added, “It’s a decision for the England manager, not for me.”

The manager also noted that Grealish has faced multiple setbacks with injuries, which have hindered his form this season, especially after being left out of Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad. Guardiola emphasized that although Grealish expressed his desire to join the national team, he remains uncertain about the communication between England’s staff and Manchester City’s medical team.
