British actor Idris Elba is poised to take on the role of Okonkwo, the central figure in Chinua Achebe’s renowned novel Things Fall Apart, in an upcoming television series produced by the American entertainment company A24. Elba, also serving as a producer for the series, is celebrated for his performances in films like Thor, The Suicide Squad, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation.

Elba has garnered critical acclaim for his roles in popular television shows, including The Wire and Luther. He also portrayed Nelson Mandela in the 2013 biographical film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.

According to an exclusive report from Variety, the series adaptation is still in its early phases and currently lacks an attached writer or a confirmed streaming service.

The official synopsis describes Things Fall Apart as the tale of Okonkwo, played by Elba, one of literature’s most iconic figures. He is depicted as a courageous African warrior and leader determined to uphold his people’s culture amid the disruptions caused by British colonizers. As Okonkwo’s efforts to maintain his power and traditions lead to intense conflict, his unwavering determination—a tragic flaw against inevitable change—makes him a memorable character that illustrates the complex interplay of strength, vulnerability, and adaptability.

Elba will work alongside Gina Carter as executive producer under their 22Summers production banner. Additional executive producers include David Oyelowo and Amanda N’Duka through Yoruba Saxon, with Ben Forkner, Dayo Ogunyemi, and Achebe Masterworks also contributing to the project.

The novel Things Fall Apart has previously been adapted into a film in 1971 and a mini-series in 1987, featuring the esteemed Nigerian actor Pete Edochie in the role of Okonkwo, the legendary wrestling champion of Umuofia.
