Israel has firmly turned down a proposed ceasefire plan backed by the United States in its ongoing conflict with Hezbollah, opting to press on with its military operations in northern Lebanon. Despite growing international calls for a 21-day truce, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz declared, “There will be no ceasefire in the north,” reaffirming Israel’s resolve to combat Hezbollah until a decisive victory is achieved, allowing residents to safely return to their homes.

This rejection of a ceasefire has dashed hopes for an immediate end to hostilities, which have witnessed some of the most intense clashes between Israel and Hezbollah in nearly twenty years.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati had previously voiced optimism regarding a potential truce, but as tensions mount, fears are escalating about the possibility of a wider regional conflict. Hezbollah has launched hundreds of missiles into Israeli territory, with Israel’s defense systems managing to intercept many of these attacks. In response, the Israeli military has conducted extensive airstrikes across Lebanon, leading to over 600 reported fatalities in the past week alone.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not issued a formal response to the ceasefire proposal but has mandated the continuation of military operations. Within his government, hardliners are staunchly against any ceasefire, advocating for relentless operations until Hezbollah is decisively defeated.

The humanitarian situation in Lebanon is rapidly deteriorating, with thousands displaced and seeking refuge in schools, as aid organizations struggle to provide essential supplies. The conflict, which has persisted for over a year, has intensified following Hezbollah’s initial missile strikes in solidarity with Hamas during its ongoing conflict with Israel in Gaza.
