John Amos, the iconic actor known for his role as the strong-willed father in Good Times and for portraying the older Kunta Kinte in the groundbreaking mini-series Roots, passed away at the age of 84. His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, confirmed that he died on August 21 in Los Angeles from natural causes.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share the news of my father’s passing,” his son stated. “He was a man with a heart of gold, loved by many as their TV father. His legacy will continue to inspire through his remarkable contributions to television and film.”

Before stepping into acting, Amos had a brief stint in football after playing for Colorado State University and attempting to join teams like the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs. His television career gained momentum when he was cast as weatherman Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, where his genial presence made an impression.

Amos later rose to prominence in the role of James Evans Sr., the head of the Evans family, in Good Times. The CBS series, which ran from 1974 to 1979, was the first sitcom centered on a Black American family, breaking new ground in television. Though he only starred in the first three seasons, Amos’s portrayal of the loving, but firm father figure became iconic.

However, creative tensions arose behind the scenes, particularly regarding the focus on comedian Jimmie Walker’s character, JJ, and his catchphrase “Dy-no-mite!” Amos, advocating for more depth for the other family members, was ultimately written out of the show after voicing his frustrations.

Following his departure from Good Times, Amos found redemption through his role in Roots, the 1977 mini-series based on Alex Haley’s novel. Playing the older Kunta Kinte was a career-defining moment that brought him critical acclaim and provided personal vindication.

Throughout his extensive career, Amos also made recurring appearances on popular shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Hunter, and The Ranch. His film credits include Die Hard 2, Coming to America, and The World’s Greatest Athlete, leaving an indelible mark across multiple entertainment platforms.
