Leadership Crisis at the Heart of Africa’s Problems, Says Former President Goodluck Jonathan

Former Nigerian President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has pinpointed leadership struggles as the primary driver behind Africa’s ongoing conflicts. During a recent event hosted by the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) in Abuja, Jonathan emphasized that the battle for power fuels most of the continent’s issues.

Speaking in commemoration of the International Day of Peace, Jonathan expressed concern over Nigeria’s own challenges, warning that political unrest would persist unless a genuine culture of peace is embraced. He argued that the conflicts across Africa stem from power struggles, and this issue must be addressed to achieve lasting peace.

Jonathan also rejected the idea that politics is inherently corrupt. Instead, he blamed corrupt individuals for tarnishing the political system, urging a change in mindset to focus on cultivating a peaceful society.

Citing the recent Edo State governorship election, which was marred by accusations of irregularities, Jonathan remarked that technology alone cannot solve Nigeria’s electoral challenges if corrupt individuals continue to exploit it.

Dr. Samuel Iroye, Head of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Open University of Nigeria, echoed Jonathan’s sentiments. He called for more youth involvement in developmental efforts and emphasized the importance of equal access to education to foster peace.

IPCR Director General Dr. Joseph Ochogwu added that achieving peace requires significant investment and urged Nigerians to prioritize peacebuilding. During the event, Jonathan was honored as a Fellow of the IPCR in recognition of his dedication to peace and conflict resolution.
