The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that Nigerians will soon be required to pay for the new multipurpose national identity card. According to Dr. Peter Iwegbu, the Head of Card Management Services at NIMC, this decision is driven by limited government revenue and the desire to ensure that the card reaches only those who genuinely need it. The move aims to address the challenges faced during previous attempts at distributing free cards, where millions went uncollected.

Dr. Iwegbu explained that by charging a fee, the government hopes to avoid the issues of card hoarding and ensure a more efficient distribution process. This payment model will also encourage Nigerians to apply for the ID only when necessary. Mr. Lanre Yusuf, NIMC’s Director of Information Technology, clarified that the new ID card will be a “post-paid” card. This means individuals must express a real need for the card before making the necessary payment.

The government has also launched programs to assist less privileged Nigerians who require the ID card to access important government services. To ensure that no one is left behind, these programs will help cover costs for those who may not be able to afford the card. In addition, the new multipurpose card, which will serve as a tool for identity verification, payments, and access to government services, will soon be available through banks nationwide.
