Nollywood is making headlines as Nigerians criticize the industry for yet another display of incompetence. Netflix Nigeria recently teased a new film set in 1993, which is based on a true story involving four young men attempting to hijack a Nigerian Airways flight. However, the filmmakers’ choice to incorporate 2020 cars, helicopters, and 2023 attire has left viewers perplexed, overshadowing the nostalgic reality they aimed to portray.

The film recounts the events surrounding the 1993 hijacking, a protest against the annulment of the June 12 elections won by MKO Abiola under the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. During the incident, the young hijackers seized a flight from Lagos to Abuja, diverting it to Niger with plans to continue to Germany. They were ultimately arrested in Niamey, Niger, during a refueling stop and sentenced to nine years in prison. Released in 2001, the young men have since expressed a desire to share their story.

The hijackers included Richard Ogunderu, who was just 19, Kabir Adenuga at 18, Benneth Oluwadaisi at 20, and Kenny Rasaq Lawal, also 19. As Nollywood continues to draw attention for its recent missteps, many are left wondering how historical accuracy was overlooked in this latest production.
