The National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) has earmarked N254 million to enhance primary healthcare services in Enugu State, as revealed by the agency’s Executive Director, Dr. Muyi Aina. This funding aims to improve health care delivery across the state, in partnership with international organizations.

Announcing the allocation on Friday during a visit to Governor Peter Mbah, Dr. Aina emphasized the need for ongoing collaboration between the federal and state governments to strengthen Enugu’s health infrastructure. He highlighted the state’s successful implementation of federal health policies and expressed his agency’s commitment to further development.

“We have completed an assessment of 253 healthcare facilities in Enugu, and N254 million has been allocated to support primary health care under the basic care provision fund,” Aina said. He also praised the Mbah administration for recruiting 450 health workers and building 260 new primary healthcare centers across the state’s 260 wards.

Aina added that Enugu would benefit from “Direct Facility Financing,” and that over 3,000 health workers in the state would undergo retraining to enhance service delivery. He further urged the governor to transition casual health workers to permanent positions.

In response, Governor Mbah affirmed his administration’s commitment to aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in reducing infant and maternal mortality rates. He emphasized that quality healthcare and education are essential to eradicating poverty and hunger in the state.

Mbah also welcomed the federal government’s intervention but stated that his administration would continue to expand healthcare services by constructing staff quarters at all 260 Type 2 health centers. These centers will be equipped with solar lighting and clean water to ensure 24-hour service.

Additionally, Mbah announced the accreditation of the Enugu State College of Nursing Sciences, with plans to build more facilities to accommodate an increased number of trainees, reflecting the state’s dedication to improving healthcare and achieving universal health coverage.
