Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, is considering waivers for extra-year students as part of a new initiative to address the academic challenges faced by those at risk of falling behind. This measure comes after a tragic incident in which a 200-level student, overwhelmed by academic pressures, attempted suicide.

A confidential memo obtained on Wednesday, dated November 1, 2024, revealed that the university’s Senate had convened a special meeting of deans to discuss how to best support affected students. The memo outlined plans to offer compassionate support and suggested waivers for students who have been struggling academically for extended periods.

The student, who had transferred from the Faculty of Pharmacy to the Department of Biology Education, attempted suicide on October 16, 2024. The case came to light when the Dean of the Faculty raised the issue with the university, leading to further discussions on the well-being of students under academic strain.

The memo, titled Decision Extract: Re: Special Meeting of Committee of Deans held on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, urged academic staff and advisors to provide continuous support to students experiencing challenges and to foster a more empathetic and supportive academic environment.

Furthermore, OAU had circulated a notice on October 17, 2024, advising that students with just one or two remaining courses before graduation should be considered for compassionate graduation, provided it does not impact their degree classification.

University spokesperson, Abiodun Olanrewaju, confirmed the administration’s commitment to tackling student suicide risks, especially for those facing stress in their final years. Olanrewaju emphasized the importance of human-centered solutions, noting that the goal is to prevent further tragedies while ensuring minimal financial impact on the university.
