Olatunji’s Striking Performance: A Message to Eguavoen

Published

Victor Olatunji has made a strong case for inclusion in the Super Eagles squad ahead of the Nigeria Football Federation’s announcement for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Libya. The Sparta Prague striker, currently uncapped at the international level, has been the talk of the town following his impressive performances, including a goal against Salzburg during his Champions League debut.

As the first Nigerian player to both score and assist on his Champions League debut, Olatunji has certainly made a name for himself. After sitting out as a substitute against České Budějovice last weekend, he was back in the starting lineup against Sigma Olomouc.

In just under thirteen minutes, Olatunji found the back of the net, capitalizing on a well-placed cross from Veljko Birmancevic, set up by a long ball from the Sparta goalkeeper. His early goal set the tone for a match that saw Nigerian forward Yunusa Muritala and teammates Jan Fiala and Filip Zorvan help the team surge to a 3-1 lead. Sigma Olomouc managed to score one in stoppage time, but Olatunji’s contribution was significant.

Substituted with nineteen minutes remaining, he left the pitch with the score at 1-1, having netted his sixth goal of the season across fifteen appearances. As anticipation builds for the Super Eagles’ AFCON qualifiers in October, fans eagerly await whether Olatunji will earn his chance to represent Nigeria on the international stage.
