Nigerian singer Oxlade has shared his thoughts on love and heartbreak, reflecting on his experience that inspired the lyric “I feel like love is overrated” from his song “Intoxicated.” During an appearance on The 90’s Baby Show, Oxlade recounted how societal pressures contributed to the downfall of a past relationship, leading him to question the authenticity of love.

When asked about his heartbreak, Oxlade hesitated to reveal the identity of his ex, referring to her only as “a thing.” He explained, “I feel like you don’t do evil for evil; that’s giving her bad PR. I can’t expose her; my community will.” This comment highlights his desire to protect both himself and his former partner from unwanted attention, especially given the nature of social media scrutiny.

Oxlade elaborated on the challenges posed by external influences on their relationship. He recalled a painful moment when he overheard friends of his ex questioning her choice to date him, saying, “Girl, what are you doing with Oxlade?” This incident had a profound impact on him, causing him to realize how public perception could disrupt personal connections. He reflected, “That thing broke me and from then on I saw the patterns change until I saw her with the same guy she said she wasn’t seeing.”

His experiences led him to conclude that while love can be beautiful, it is not something that can be easily found. “Love is sweet o, but it’s not everywhere. You can’t find true love everywhere, and you must be lucky; God wants you to see love before you can find it,” he stated, underscoring the idea that true love often requires more than just desire and commitment.
