The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Lagos State chapter, is urging Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to take decisive action against counterfeit medications by establishing a Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) in Lagos, mirroring a successful model in Kano State. This initiative aims to combat the pressing issues of fake drugs, drug abuse, and expired medications, ensuring a safer and more traceable drug distribution system.

During the 2024 World Pharmacists Day event in Lagos, themed “Pharmacists: Meeting Global Health Needs,” PSN Lagos Chairman Babayemi Oyekunle emphasized the vital role of a CWC in regulating drug distribution and eradicating substandard drugs. He pointed out that with Lagos’s substantial population, implementing global best practices for drug traceability is essential.

In addition, Oyekunle called on the Lagos State Government to address pending circulars regarding the consultancy cadre for pharmacists and fulfill outstanding agreements. He warned that neglecting these issues could lead to labor unrest within the health sector.

Supporting this initiative, Tolulope Ajayi, Chairman of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, underscored the importance of prioritizing patient care. He urged the government to demonstrate political will in establishing the CWC to safeguard the public from the dangers of falsified medications infiltrating the healthcare system.
