The Rivers State Police Command has unsealed the secretariats of all 23 local government areas, following a directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun. This move was announced on Monday by the state’s police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, in compliance with the IGP’s orders.

The unsealing comes just a day after Governor Siminalayi Fubara inaugurated the newly elected chairmen who won in the recent local government elections. Back in July, police had sealed off these local government headquarters due to the crisis stemming from the controversial extension of tenure for the former chairmen.

During that time, the facilities were guarded by police personnel, but the latest directive emphasizes the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to political neutrality and the smooth functioning of democratic institutions.

The Rivers Police Command reiterated that this decision reflects its dedication to neutrality, stating, “Police personnel will only be redeployed in case of any crisis or law and order breakdown, with emergency measures quickly implemented to restore normalcy.”

Furthermore, the Command reassured the public that it remains committed to maintaining peace and order across the state, urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding as the situation progresses.
