Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, announced that the House Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution has received 161 proposals for constitutional amendments. Kalu shared this update during an interview after addressing the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) meeting in Abuja alongside other key members of the House.

Highlighting the critical role of state governors in the process, Kalu stressed the need for collaboration to ensure the success of the constitutional review. “Engaging governors is essential for accelerating the progress of these amendments and ensuring their implementation aligns with the aspirations of Nigerians,” he stated.

The committee plans to visit states and geopolitical zones nationwide to gather public feedback on the proposed amendments. “We have received around 161 proposed amendments and will provide a detailed breakdown in upcoming engagements,” Kalu added, emphasizing transparency and inclusiveness in the review process.

In a bid to streamline efforts, the Deputy Speaker urged governors to appoint liaison officers in each state to facilitate communication and coordination. He reiterated that close cooperation with state executives is vital to achieving meaningful reforms in the constitution.
