Pro-Biafran agitator Simon Ekpa will spend Christmas in detention, as Finland’s legal system does not permit bail. This announcement comes amid dramatic developments where his followers declared the creation of the United States of Biafra at a conference held in Finland on Friday.

Ekpa, who describes himself as the “Prime Minister” of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile, was arrested by Finnish authorities last week alongside four others for alleged terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism. According to Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, Ekpa is being held under remand without the possibility of bail, a measure justified under Finnish criminal procedure laws.

Pro-Biafran Movement Gains Momentum in Finland
At the conference held in Lahti, Finland, Ekpa’s supporters officially declared the United States of Biafra, a symbolic move that has garnered international attention. Videos shared on social media captured large crowds of Nigerians arriving in Finland for the event, dubbed “Biafra Mass Exodus 2024.” The convener of the convention, Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, introduced herself as the Chief of Staff of the United States of Biafra. Orabueze, who resides in the United States, described the declaration as a historic step for Biafrans worldwide.

“Biafra has been re-declared today, 29th of November 2024,” she announced on her social media accounts, adding that the movement would adopt its own currency and time zone. A pre-recorded video of Simon Ekpa addressing the audience was also played during the event, where he reiterated his call for Biafran independence and rejected Nigerian governance.

Mixed Reactions from Stakeholders
The declaration has sparked mixed reactions among various groups. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by Nnamdi Kanu, distanced itself from the movement, calling Ekpa’s faction “criminals.” IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful clarified, “We have no involvement in this declaration. When IPOB makes such a decision, the entire world will know.”

Similarly, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) acknowledged the declaration but noted its limitations. “Declaring independence in Finland doesn’t mean we are free from Nigerian government control,” said MASSOB spokesperson Sunday Edeson.

Legal and Diplomatic Implications
The Finnish authorities have confirmed that Ekpa’s trial will commence in May 2025. Meanwhile, Nigerian authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, have expressed their desire for Ekpa’s extradition to Nigeria to face criminal charges. However, the lack of an extradition agreement between Nigeria and Finland complicates the process. Legal experts suggest that international conventions on terrorism may still provide grounds for extradition.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, reiterated Nigeria’s stance, stating, “Simon Ekpa should be extradited to Nigeria to face justice.” Nonetheless, legal analysts have raised questions about Nigeria’s ability to meet international extradition requirements.
