“Still One of the Best Goalkeepers”: Benfica Legend Defends Neuer Amidst Criticism

The spotlight on Manuel Neuer has intensified as critics question his recent performances, particularly after conceding a number of goals in the Champions League that many viewed as saveable. However, not all are joining in the criticism. Nuno Gomes, the legendary Benfica striker, has come forward to defend the FC Bayern goalkeeper, reaffirming his belief in Neuer’s top-tier abilities ahead of Bayern’s upcoming match against Benfica.
Gomes, speaking to Munich’s tz, praised Neuer’s experience and quality, stating that the 38-year-old remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world. “For me, he is still one of the best goalkeepers in the world and one of the reasons why Bayern is so good,” Gomes said, emphasizing Neuer’s value to the team despite the growing scrutiny.

Although Gomes has high praise for Neuer, he jokingly hopes the German goalkeeper won’t be at his best when Benfica faces Bayern. “I hope that he is not at his best in the game against Benfica because I think that Benfica will create some chances,” said Gomes with a wink, showing his competitive spirit.
Looking ahead to the match, Gomes acknowledged the challenge that lies ahead for Benfica. Despite Bayern’s recent losses in the Champions League, including to Barcelona and Aston Villa, Gomes still sees them as a top contender for the title. “They are still a favorite to win the Champions League, along with three or four other teams,” he noted. The former striker recognized Bayern’s strength, particularly their attacking power, and stressed that Benfica’s defense will need to be sharp to contain the Munich side’s offense.
