The Taraba State government has approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for its employees, responding directly to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) strike notice aimed at states yet to implement the revised national minimum wage. Set to take effect in November 2024, this move places Taraba among the few states to align early with the NLC’s push for enhanced worker compensation.

Paul Maigida Tino, Taraba’s Head of Service, confirmed the news in an official statement, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting state workers. “His Excellency, the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has approved the implementation of a N70,000 new minimum wage for workers in Taraba State, effective from November 2024, in alignment with his administration’s efforts to fulfill the aspirations of the state’s workforce,” Tino stated.

The announcement has been warmly received by civil servants, who expressed appreciation for the state’s efforts to address their needs. However, they urged the government to ensure that the new minimum wage is implemented as scheduled and called for the reinstatement of annual wage increments, which have been on hold.

As the December 1 strike deadline approaches, Taraba’s proactive stance may set a benchmark for other states navigating labor demands and employee welfare, reflecting a growing national momentum toward improved labor standards.
