With just hours to go before the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024, President Bola Tinubu has called for calm and respect for democracy. Addressing the rising tension in the state, the president urged politicians, candidates, and stakeholders to uphold peace and allow the people’s will to prevail.

Tinubu’s stance was shared in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The president emphasized the importance of respecting the democratic process, encouraging all parties to approach the election with civility and sportsmanship.

“The President implores the governorship candidates, political parties, and supporters to respect the democratic process and the people’s will. He believes in the voters’ ability to make informed decisions about their future leaders,” the statement read.

Tinubu expressed his confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, trusting that they will remain impartial and committed to delivering a free and fair election.

In his statement, the president also commended the candidates for addressing issues important to Edo State residents, such as economic development and improved livelihoods. He called on all citizens to maintain peace during the voting process and to resolve any disputes through lawful means.

Finally, Tinubu reiterated his faith in the integrity of both INEC and security personnel, urging them to uphold professionalism throughout the election.
