President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff. This development follows Oluyede’s tenure in an acting capacity, during which he has been praised for his professionalism and dedication to national security.

The president’s request, submitted in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session, aligns with Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act. Tinubu commended Oluyede’s commitment to maintaining the stability and progress of Nigeria’s armed forces.

Highlighting Oluyede’s qualifications and contributions, Tinubu expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Nigerian Army effectively. “His exceptional professionalism and unwavering commitment to our nation’s security make him a valuable asset to this role,” Tinubu stated. The president urged the Senate to expedite the confirmation process to ensure continuity in military leadership.

The Senate has since referred the nomination to its Committee on the Army for screening. The committee is expected to submit its findings for further deliberation in the plenary.

Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede stepped into the role of Acting Chief of Army Staff following the illness and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja. Tinubu appointed Oluyede to the position, emphasizing his experience and suitability for the job. His confirmation now awaits legislative approval.
