Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has granted amnesty to 117 convicts serving various prison sentences in the state, marking a significant gesture of compassion on Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, Aiyedatiwa described this decision as a transformative step aimed at reforming the lives of the affected individuals. The initiative was implemented based on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, reflecting a commitment to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.

Among those benefiting from this amnesty, 19 convicts will be fully released, while others will have their death sentences commuted to life imprisonment. Adeniyan stated, “Several inmates will have their sentences reduced, paving the way for renewed hope and opportunities for reintegration into society.”

The announcement was formally made by Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

Adeniyan emphasized, “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions align with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).” He noted that the council’s discussions were informed by insights from correctional authorities, legal experts, and respected community members, focusing on factors like the nature of the offences, duration of imprisonment, age, health, and inmate behavior.

This compassionate gesture underscores Aiyedatiwa’s unwavering commitment to decongesting correctional facilities in Ondo State and plays a crucial role in ongoing justice sector reforms. The approval of these releases not only signifies a step towards mercy but also reinforces the belief in the potential for change and redemption within every individual.
