Former African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has joined protesters in Lagos today, leading a march that calls for significant change in Nigeria. Arriving at the protest site under the Ikeja Underbridge at 8:50 a.m., Sowore emphasized that the protest symbolizes a rejection of the government’s Independence Day celebrations and is a step towards a better future for the country.

Speaking to the press, Sowore explained that the protest aims to push Nigeria toward the “promised land,” challenging the effectiveness of past leadership. He questioned the additional time granted to the government, specifically pointing to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure, and criticized the administration for not delivering meaningful improvements.

“This is one of the actions that will take us to the promised land. Today is a symbolic day to reject their version of independence, as we want true independence,” Sowore declared.

He further added, “Have we not tried enough? We’ve run out of time. We gave them more time, and they misused it—buying private jets, increasing fuel prices, keeping us in darkness. We gave them more time, and they gave us minimum wage while enjoying maximum benefits themselves.”

The protest is taking place at Ikeja Underbridge, marking Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, and has drawn a significant police presence, along with security officials from the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps. The march has now moved along Awolowo Way, with protesters expressing their frustration with the current state of affairs in the country.
