An artisan named Sunday Ejoh has been sentenced to six months in correctional custody for the theft of three tubers of yam in Osogbo, Osun State. The sentencing took place in a Magistrate Court on Monday.

Ejoh, who works in aluminum fabrication, was charged with theft following an incident that occurred on September 22, 2024, in Okinni, located within the Egbedore local government area. Police prosecutor ASP Jacob Akitunde revealed that the stolen yams, valued at N3,000, belonged to Olawole Durojaye. The court found Ejoh guilty of violating Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Law of Osun State, Nigeria, 2002.

During the proceedings, Ejoh, who represented himself, pleaded guilty, stating, “I am hungry, and I have a family.” The police had also recovered a cutlass and slippers among other items from him.

In delivering the sentence, presiding magistrate M.A. Olatunji ordered Ejoh to serve six months in prison, with the alternative option of paying a fine of N25,000.
