The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted bail to two co-defendants of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, who is implicated in a substantial N110.4 billion fraud case. The bail was granted to Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, who were released pending their formal arraignment. This development was confirmed during Thursday’s court session held at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, Abuja.

Court proceedings, however, were met with delays as neither Bello nor his legal representatives made an appearance. The EFCC’s counsel, Jamiu Agoro, informed the court that the commission had adhered to a previously issued public summons, mandating Bello’s appearance to face the allegations. This summons, with a validity period of 30 days, is set to expire on November 17. In light of this, the EFCC has requested an adjournment to provide the former governor with a final opportunity to respond to the charges leveled against him.

If Bello fails to appear by the November 17 deadline, the EFCC has indicated plans to escalate its legal response. Following the EFCC’s application, the court has agreed to adjourn the matter to November 27. In the meantime, a fresh hearing notice will be served to Bello at his last known residence in Abuja.

Bello and his co-defendants are facing serious accusations, including conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and the possession of unlawfully acquired assets. According to the EFCC, Bello allegedly misused state funds during his tenure, acquiring various luxury properties in Abuja, Dubai, and other locations. The total value of these purportedly misappropriated funds stands at N110.4 billion, raising significant concerns about the handling of public finances and trust.
