Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has officially responded to an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), according to a statement from his media office released on Wednesday.

Signed by the Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, Ohiare Michael, the announcement emphasized that Bello’s decision to appear before the anti-graft agency followed extensive discussions with his family, legal advisors, and political colleagues. The statement, titled “Former Governor Yahaya Bello Honors EFCC’s Invitation,” underscores his commitment to transparency and accountability.

Bello arrived at the EFCC headquarters accompanied by several prominent Nigerians, signaling the support he has garnered amid ongoing scrutiny over alleged financial misconduct during his tenure as governor.

Facing serious allegations, Bello and three others are implicated in 19 counts related to money laundering, involving a staggering N80.2 billion. However, he remains steadfast in his assertion of innocence, stating, “I have nothing to hide and nothing to fear.”

The statement further clarified that Bello has actively sought to enforce his fundamental rights throughout the investigation, ensuring due process in all legal proceedings. “The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. It is crucial for the former Governor to honor the EFCC’s invitation to clear his name,” the statement explained.

Bello expressed his strong belief in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to foster sustainable economic development in Nigeria and reiterated his support for the fight against corruption in the nation.

As of the publication of this report, attempts to reach the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, for comments were unsuccessful.

In April, EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede made headlines by pledging to resign if former Governor Bello is not prosecuted, asserting his commitment to seeing the case through to its conclusion. He also vowed to ensure that anyone who obstructed Bello’s arrest faces justice.
