Eguavoen Stands by Boniface as Goal Drought Persists

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has now gone seven consecutive matches without scoring for Nigeria, as he failed to net once again in the team’s recent 1-0 victory over Libya in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. This match marks nearly a year since Boniface last found the back of the net for his country, having last scored during a 2-2 friendly against Saudi Arabia on October 13, 2023.
Since that initial goal for Nigeria, Boniface has struggled to replicate his scoring success. His dry spell includes matches against Mozambique and disappointing performances during World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
An adductor injury previously sidelined him from the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, and he was left on the bench during the third match of the World Cup qualifier against South Africa. Although he featured for 40 minutes in Nigeria’s 2-1 loss to Benin Republic, he couldn’t change the game’s outcome

Despite kicking off the 2024/25 season strongly with Bayer Leverkusen, Boniface’s form has not translated to the national team. His performance on Friday was telling, as he failed to register a single shot on target despite being given a starting position by interim coach Austin Eguavoen. After 74 minutes of play, Eguavoen replaced him with Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi, marking Boniface’s continued struggle in front of goal.
Ahead of the match, Eguavoen had expressed his confidence in Boniface, assuring fans that if the striker got the chance to start, he would find a way to score. “Victor Boniface has always been part of this team. Yes, he has not been able to find the back of the net. But I can assure you that if he starts tomorrow, he will score,” Eguavoen stated.
As Nigeria prepares to face the Mediterranean Knights at the Martyrs of February Stadium on Tuesday, Boniface is hopeful that he can finally shake off his scoring drought.
