The Plateau State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) is urging travellers to report reckless driving in a bid to reduce road accidents during the 2024 ember months. The call was made as part of the launch of a safety campaign titled “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers,” which began on November 6, 2024, in Jos, the state capital.

The campaign, which includes a series of public awareness activities, such as a press briefing, town hall meetings, flyer distribution, and a motorcade, aims to educate the public on the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of following road safety rules. At the flag-off event, the Sector Commander of the FRSC in Plateau State, Maxwell Plateau, emphasized the need for a shift in driver behavior to ensure passenger safety.

“Passengers have the right to a safe journey. It is essential that they speak up if they notice any reckless driving,” Plateau stated, stressing that safety is a shared responsibility. He also highlighted that the FRSC will increase its presence on the roads, enhance traffic enforcement, and improve rescue efforts during the busy ember months.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who was represented by Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Noel Nkup, praised the FRSC’s efforts to reduce road traffic accidents and ensure smoother travel. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the current state of the roads in the region but reassured the public that improvements would be made soon.

In support of the campaign, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Plateau State, led by Yakubu Dalyop, announced measures to enhance road safety. The union pledged to enforce strict vehicle inspections and ensure that no overloaded or unsafe vehicles are allowed to operate. All passenger manifests will be checked for compliance, and vehicle tires will be inspected for roadworthiness.
