Governor Mutfwang Vows Crackdown on Unsafe Buildings and Illegal Property in Plateau

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has pledged decisive action to enhance building safety and reclaim illegally acquired government property. Addressing concerns after the tragic collapse of a school building in Jos on July 12, 2024, which resulted in 22 fatalities and left 154 people trapped, the governor emphasized the urgent need for preventive measures across the state.

The collapsed two-story structure, housing Saint Academy in Jos North, was revealed to lack essential architectural approvals. In response, Governor Mutfwang committed to enforcing rigorous structural integrity checks on all buildings to avert future disasters. He praised the committee led by Prof. Danladi Matawal for its comprehensive investigation into the tragedy, assuring that their findings would shape government policy.

Expanding on the scope of safety efforts, the governor directed the committee to also evaluate the structural stability of the Jos Main Market and the Rockland Hotel in Laminga. These assessments aim to ensure that public facilities across the state meet safety standards.

Beyond building safety, Governor Mutfwang announced plans to form a task force to reclaim illegally acquired state-owned properties. He warned individuals occupying such assets to vacate or face legal repercussions. This initiative underscores his administration’s commitment to restoring public trust and ensuring accountability.

The governor further revealed plans to restructure the Jos Metropolitan Development Board, aiming to enhance service delivery and foster urban development in Plateau State. These measures signal a comprehensive approach to addressing critical safety and governance issues within the region.
