Dr. Alaye Theophilus, factional President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), has explained why the planned protest against the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) was called off. The protest, set for Thursday, November 14, 2024, was initially aimed at addressing grievances with the NDDC’s perceived selective and ineffective management.

In a statement issued from Port Harcourt, Theophilus credited the timely intervention of regional leaders, including Pa Edwin Clark, Ambassador Godknows Igali, Alhaji Asari Mujahid Dokubo, HRM King Ateke Michael Tom, and the Ijaw National Congress (INC), for averting the demonstration. These influential figures advised that escalating tensions could be harmful, particularly with the ongoing political volatility and recent violence in Abuloma.

“The advice from our respected elders was to ensure we avoid stirring unrest and political opportunism during such a delicate period,” Theophilus explained. He emphasized that the primary focus of the IYC remains on the peaceful development of the Niger Delta, despite the frustrations with the NDDC.

The IYC leader reiterated the group’s commitment to holding the NDDC accountable and ensuring the Commission prioritizes sustainable infrastructure, as well as broader economic opportunities, across the region. He also warned that, should these issues remain unresolved, the IYC will not hesitate to resume mobilizing for action.

“Our struggle for justice and equitable development continues,” Theophilus assured, reinforcing the IYC’s ongoing advocacy for the Ijaw people’s rights and the proper management of the region’s resources.
