Kaduna State Government Reinforces Commitment to Child Rights Through Robust Policies and Initiatives

The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its dedication to safeguarding children’s rights through an array of laws and policies. This commitment was emphasized by Hajia Rabi Salisu, the Commissioner for Human Services and Social Development, during a recent zonal policy dialogue on social budgeting for child-sensitive sectors held in Nasarawa, part of the North Central zone.

Commissioner Salisu highlighted key initiatives, including the Child Welfare and Protection Law of 2018, designed to ensure that children’s best interests are prioritized within the justice system. This landmark legislation forms a crucial part of the state’s comprehensive approach to child welfare.

The state has established several support structures, such as Children Diversion Centers offering alternative care options, and Shelter Homes, including the Barnawa Boys Shelter and the Katuru Road Women and Children Shelter. These facilities provide essential programs for at-risk children and comprehensive orphanage services.

Emphasizing the significance of the dialogue, Commissioner Salisu pointed out the need to address funding gaps and barriers to effective implementation. She expressed appreciation for the organizers and UNICEF’s support, underscoring their joint efforts to enhance the lives of vulnerable children in Kaduna State.
