Kekere-Ekun Sworn in as Nigeria’s 23rd Chief Justice

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has been formally sworn in as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN). President Bola Tinubu officiated the ceremony on Monday, after her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.

During the ceremony, held at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja, Kekere-Ekun took her oath of office and signed the oath register. She succeeds Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who retired on August 22, 2024, after serving since June 27, 2022.

Notably, the event was attended by three of her predecessors, including the first female CJN, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, along with Justices Mahmud Mohammed, Walter Onnoghen, and the outgoing Justice Ariwoola. Family members and other Supreme Court justices were also present to witness the historic moment.

This swearing-in is the second for Kekere-Ekun within five weeks, as she had previously taken the oath as Acting CJN on August 23, following Tinubu’s appointment and pending Senate confirmation.
