The Kwara State government has issued a stern warning to environmental offenders, emphasizing strict enforcement of the monthly sanitation exercise. Commissioner for the Environment, Nafisat Buge, declared on Saturday in Ilorin that violators would face full legal consequences, following the arrest of over 150 offenders during the latest cleanup operation.

During the exercise, monitored by the state’s Task Force Team, offenders were apprehended for engaging in activities such as operating commercial motorcycles (Okadas) and selling goods illegally during the mandated sanitation hours. The apprehended individuals have been arraigned before mobile courts convened at various locations across Kwara.

Despite extensive awareness campaigns, including print, electronic, and social media advocacy starting from the Monday preceding the exercise, compliance remains an issue. “We engage media outlets and social platforms throughout the week to remind residents of the sanitation schedule. Still, some choose to flout the rules. This is unacceptable, and violators will be dealt with according to the law,” Buge asserted.

While expressing concern over continued violations, the commissioner highlighted the progress made and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to achieving full compliance. She reassured residents of the government’s dedication to maintaining a clean and hygienic environment for healthy living in Kwara.
