As the residents of Nasarawa State gear up for local government elections on November 2, 2024, the Labour Party is advocating for a peaceful and credible electoral process. During an event in Lafia, the state capital, on Saturday, Labour Party Chairman Alexander Ombugu emphasized the party’s commitment to participating in the upcoming elections.

Ombugu made it clear that the Labour Party is prepared for the elections, stating, “The Labour Party in Nasarawa State is fully ready to participate in the November 2 Local Government election. We just commenced the screening of our aspirants today, and by the 15th of this month (October), we hope to begin the primary elections for both chairmanship and councillorship positions.”

He urged the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission (NASIEC) to ensure that the elections are conducted in a free and fair manner. “We decided to participate in the LG poll because of the assurances given to us by NASIEC that the elections will be free and fair. We are hopeful that the electoral body will uphold its promises and facilitate a smooth process without any interference,” he added.

In related news, Ombugu voiced the Labour Party’s support for the Supreme Court’s ruling that granted full autonomy to the 774 local governments across Nigeria. He explained that this autonomy would bolster democracy at the grassroots level and empower local authorities to make impactful decisions for rural communities.

Addressing the internal conflicts within the party at the national level, Ombugu congratulated national chairman Julius Abure on his recent Federal High Court victory, which upheld the legitimacy of the March 2024 Nnewi national convention and reaffirmed his leadership position.

Ombugu reaffirmed the state chapter’s unwavering support for Abure, stating, “All of us in the Nasarawa State Labour Party are solidly behind our National Chairman, Julius Abure. He is a transparent leader. We love him and will continue to stand by him.”
