The Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) has reassured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following recent earth tremors, urging the public to remain calm as the tremors pose no environmental threat.

In a statement released on Wednesday, NGSA Director-General, Professor Olusegun Ige, confirmed that the agency has been closely monitoring the tremors, and their findings indicate that the events are minor and not a cause for alarm.

The agency recorded around 48 seismic events between Friday, September 13, and Monday, September 16, noting an increase in both intensity and frequency over this period.

“The NGSA Monitoring Station at Katampe has detected significant ground movements over the past five days, starting from September 13, 2024,” the statement read. “Of these, only one mild tremor was recorded on the 13th, followed by six events on the 14th. On the 15th, more than 21 tremors occurred with increased intensity, and over 20 were recorded on the 16th.”

Preliminary analysis suggests that the sources of these ground motions are within 5 kilometers of the Katampe monitoring station. The NGSA also conducted on-site assessments of affected areas, including Mpape, Katampe, and Maitama.

“The tremors are linked to accumulated stress along identified faults, releasing seismic energy that likely traveled through fractures to other parts of the FCT,” the statement continued.

Although the tremors were felt across multiple areas, their intensity ranged between III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Scale, classifying them as weak to light and presenting a very low-level threat.

Residents in affected areas have been advised not to panic. The NGSA confirmed ongoing monitoring of the situation and assured the public that real-time updates from their seismic stations will be provided if necessary.
