Niger Looks to Russia for Investment in Uranium and Natural Resources Amid Tensions with France

Published

Niger is exploring new opportunities for foreign investment, particularly in uranium and natural resources, as the country moves away from its traditional ties with France. This change comes after strained relations with the former colonial power, especially after a military coup in July 2023, which has caused political tensions.

Ousmane Abarchi, Niger’s mining minister, confirmed that the government has already opened discussions with Russian companies interested in tapping into Niger’s rich mineral resources. Abarchi noted that while French companies have been active in Niger’s mining sector for years, the French government’s refusal to recognize Niger’s new military leadership has led to significant shifts in the country’s economic strategies.

“Given France’s stance, does it make sense for us to let French companies continue to exploit our resources?” Abarchi remarked, highlighting Niger’s intent to diversify its foreign relations and attract new international partners. This includes a reassessment of the regulatory framework that governs foreign access to Niger’s natural wealth, particularly its uranium, where the country ranks as the seventh-largest global producer.
