The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has provided financial assistance totaling N15.6 billion to the families and next of kin of 5,225 fallen officers between 2023 and 2024. This significant payout was confirmed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, during a cheque presentation ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday.

IGP Egbetokun explained that the funds disbursed cover unpaid insurance benefits for officers who lost their lives in service. The payment spans several years of outstanding insurance policies, including 2018-2019, 2021-2022, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024.

Between July 2023 and June 2024, the NPF disbursed a total of N9.85 billion to 3,077 families, spread across six different payout occasions. The latest round of disbursement will see the presentation of N5.75 billion to families of officers who died in the line of duty.

Highlighting the significance of the event, IGP Egbetokun noted that this marks the largest cheque disbursement in NPF history for families of deceased officers. He reiterated the force’s dedication to easing the burden on the families of their fallen colleagues, ensuring they receive much-needed financial support.

While addressing the recipients, IGP Egbetokun acknowledged that no financial aid could replace their loved ones but expressed hope that the support would help them face future challenges with more security.
