The Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation following the emergence of a disturbing viral video showing officers involved in a violent confrontation with a man. This incident occurred on September 16, 2024, while officers attempted to execute an arrest warrant for 32-year-old Prince Amaechi, who is facing drug trafficking charges.

In the video, officers can be seen pinning Amaechi to the ground as he held a child, while his wife recorded the distressing scene and called for help.

Police spokesperson Henry Okoye confirmed the identities of four operatives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit involved in the incident: Sergeant Patrick Nwangbo, Corporal Godswill Okechukwu, Corporal Justice Nnorom, and Corporal Goodluck Iwuagwu. Okoye condemned their actions, describing them as unprofessional, and stated that the state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has ordered the case to be referred to the IGP X-Squad for a thorough investigation.

In an official statement released on Sunday, the police acknowledged the video circulating on social media and reassured the public of their commitment to handling such matters seriously. “We are dedicated to maintaining law and order in the state,” the statement emphasized.

The police explained that the officers were acting on an arrest warrant based on the confessions of suspects previously taken into custody. However, the situation escalated when Amaechi resisted arrest, leading to the aggressive confrontation captured in the video.

The command stressed that the incident should have been handled with greater discretion and professionalism. The involved officers have been detained for questioning and will undergo an orderly room trial pending the investigation’s outcome.
