The Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has highlighted the critical need for Nigeria to obtain accurate, reliable, and up-to-date energy data to effectively manage and track its energy transition process. Speaking at the launch of the National Energy Information System (NEIS) at the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja, Nnaji emphasized that the Energy Commission of Nigeria is committed to improving energy data collection methods.

The NEIS aims to enhance the quality, coverage, and accessibility of energy data, benefiting all sectors of the Nigerian economy. Nnaji pointed out that the collaboration between the Energy Commission and the ECOWAS Commission will empower Nigeria to plan energy programs more effectively, make informed policy decisions, and support the transformation of its energy sector. “The need for energy transition requires a comprehensive approach, ensuring that project designs, policies, and strategies are driven by reliable, high-quality data,” he remarked.

The Minister further explained that the computerized National Energy Information System is designed to streamline data collection, minimize errors, accelerate data processing, and enhance the overall quality and dissemination of energy information. This initiative is seen as a vital step toward achieving Nigeria’s energy goals.

In his welcome address, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, Director-General and CEO of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), outlined the Commission’s strategic role in coordinating national energy policies. He asserted that the establishment of the NEIS will create a centralized source of reliable data, facilitating energy planning, research, and decision-making across the country.

Delivering the keynote address, Prince Aderemi Adeniran, Statistician General of the Federation and CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), underscored the transformative potential of the NEIS. He stated that this system would revolutionize the way Nigeria collects, analyzes, and disseminates energy data, thereby enhancing the country’s capacity to manage its energy resources efficiently and ensure energy security.
