The Nobel Prize season is back, showcasing remarkable advancements in science and literature, with the latest achievements announced in the fields of physiology and medicine, as well as physics. This prestigious award, initiated by Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel in 1901, recognizes individuals whose work significantly benefits humanity.

Spanning six categories—Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, Peace, and Economic Sciences—the Nobel Prizes are revealed each October, culminating in a grand ceremony on December 10.

The 2024 announcements kicked off on October 7, with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun. Their groundbreaking research on microRNA has transformed our understanding of gene regulation.

A day later, on October 8, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their pivotal contributions to machine learning via artificial neural networks.

Today, on October 9, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced at 11:45 CEST. Following this, the Nobel Prize in Literature will be revealed on October 10 at 13:00 CEST, and the Peace Prize will be announced on October 11 at 11:00 CEST. Finally, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel will conclude the announcements on October 14 at 11:45 CEST.

The Nobel Foundation, which manages Nobel’s fortune, remains committed to fulfilling his vision: “to reward those who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind.” Since its inception, the Nobel Prizes, including the Economic Sciences Prize, have honored 1,004 laureates across 623 awards, recognizing 969 individuals and 27 organizations.

Each year, the selection process involves thousands of academicians, scientists, and parliamentary members worldwide submitting nominations. These nominations remain confidential for 50 years, ensuring the integrity and mystique of the Nobel process.

In Nigeria’s history, only one individual, Wole Soyinka, has won a Nobel Prize. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986, becoming the first African to receive this honor. Soyinka’s work blends traditional African theatre with Western literary forms, addressing themes of oppression, tyranny, and human dignity. His citation praised him for his broad cultural perspective and poetic style that vividly portrays the drama of existence.

The Nobel Prize medal, made of gold, features a likeness of Alfred Nobel on one side, while the reverse displays different images depending on the awarding institution. Currently, each Nobel Prize amounts to SEK 11 million, which can be divided among up to three laureates sharing the prize.
