Eighteen political parties in Ondo State, Nigeria, have signed a Peace Accord, committing to a peaceful gubernatorial election and pledging to respect the results, provided the process is fair and transparent. This accord represents a critical step towards ensuring a violence-free election in the Southwest state.

The Peace Accord was overseen by General Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Chair of the National Peace Committee, who urged candidates and their parties to prioritize democratic values, refrain from vote-buying, and contribute to preserving Nigeria’s stability. “This commitment to peace is essential for the future of Nigeria,” Abubakar stated, emphasizing the need for accountability and fairness throughout the election process.

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), shared encouraging news, reporting no current security threats and expressing hope for a peaceful election day. He assured that INEC would strengthen logistics to support the voting process and urged all political participants to honor their peace commitments.

Security arrangements were also highlighted, with Inspector General of Police, represented by AIG Sylvester Abiodun, announcing the deployment of over 36,000 officers throughout Ondo’s 18 local government areas. This force, bolstered by additional security personnel, will total 43,157, aimed at maintaining peace and protecting citizens’ safety during the election.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa welcomed the peace initiative, acknowledging the National Peace Committee’s efforts and pledging his administration’s support. He called on all parties to join in upholding peace and democracy for a stable and secure election atmosphere.
