Victor Osimhen, the Nigerian striker who recently joined Galatasaray, has found himself at the center of a heated debate following his debut match in Turkey. In a game where Galatasaray triumphed 4-1 against Çaykur Rizespor, Osimhen provided a crucial assist but also attracted attention due to his protective face mask.

The controversy began after a collision with Çaykur Rizespor’s Khusniddin Alikulov, who suffered a concussion. Osimhen’s mask, which contains metal parts, has raised concerns about its safety for other players. Some are now questioning whether the mask poses a risk on the field.

Osimhen has been wearing the protective mask since November 2021, following a severe injury during a match against Inter Milan. After undergoing surgery that involved the insertion of six plates and 18 screws to repair broken bones in his face, the mask has become essential for his protection.

However, Turkish football officials are now debating if the mask, while vital for Osimhen’s safety, could be dangerous for others. The discussion remains unresolved, with some calling for a review of its use in matches.

Former referee Fırat Aydınus added to the conversation, stating, “The referee may decide whether the mask is allowed. In Alikulov’s case, did the mask’s material contribute to his concussion? Referees should pay attention to the safety of equipment used on the field.”
