Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has earned praise from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Oyo for his approval of a new minimum wage of N80,000 for state workers. The NLC described the decision as a forward-thinking step aimed at improving the welfare of the workforce.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Dotun Oyelade, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, confirmed that the new wage was approved based on recommendations from a government-appointed technical committee.

Speaking to journalists in Ibadan, NLC Chairman Kayode Martins commended Governor Makinde for his action, calling it a clear demonstration of his dedication to the welfare of workers. “The governor has once again proven himself as a listening leader and a true trailblazer. This is the first time state workers will be earning more than their federal counterparts,” Martins said.

Martins further highlighted that the new minimum wage would boost morale and increase productivity among workers. He urged the government’s negotiation team to ensure fair adjustments for all employees, in line with the governor’s commitment to the workforce.

Acknowledging the patience and unity of Oyo’s workers throughout the review process, Martins assured the administration of the continued support of labour unions in promoting initiatives that enhance the well-being of Oyo workers.
